[BRIEF NOTE] Happy Thanksgiving
Happy thanksgiving, all!

Back in 2004, I made a brief post regarding the origins of Canadian Thanksgiving and its differences from the American (climate and closer adherence to European traditions explain our holiday's precocity), while the following year I confessed the dark secrets behind the practice of this Canadian holiday.

I'm keeping busy at my end. Special thanks to [info]bitterlawngnome, [info]danthered and [info]djjo for the hospitality and good food they offered at last night's thanksgiving dinner.

America's late-November Thanksgiving is poorly timed. It's much too close to Christmas, which can be a major inconvenience for many people, for instance college students attending school far from home. There's almost a three-month stretch from Labor Day to Thanksgiving with no major holidays, not that many employers recognize Columbus Day and Veteran's Day, and then three major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day) in a little over a month. It really would make more sense to celebrate America's Thanksgiving at the same time as Canada's.

Well, there's never been a tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving that early in the United States, so it's very unlikely that it's going to happen anytime soon.

Columbus Day suffers from the fact that in certain areas, it's much too close to the Jewish religious holidays. In turn, Veteran's Day is too close to Thanksgiving for employers to let that day slip. Also, many places have swapped Columbus Day or Veteran's Day for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and for many buisnesses, the choice is obvious lest they look like racists.

I'm an American, and I've managed to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with my cousins in Ottawa, and they were very thankful for it. It seems as if they've been envious of hearing about other families having Thanksgiving in their neighbourhood and in the States, but for some reason my aunts never got into the whole tradition. We drove up with some food, bought some stuff up there and we fried some traditional Haitian pork to go along with the turkey. Thanks to us, they've celebrated for the past two years despite our absence. We probably would have travelled up there this year, but the logistics just weren't in our favour.

BTW, is Canadian Thanksgiving a bilingual holiday, or is it just for Anglos?
