[LINK] Two links on French in Canada from the Toronto Star

  • Chantal Hébert describes, from her own experience as a mother and a Canadian Francophone, the conscious planning that it take to keep the French language in good stead, whether among children or within cities.

  • Rob Ferguson reports that Premier Dalton McGuinty, with a Francophone mother and French-language schooling, is the only leader of Ontario's three major political parties to speak French. The other leaders--Tim Hudak of the Progressive Conservatives and Andrea Horvath of the New Democratic Party--are trying to catch up.

The best part of that Chantal article, by far, is the comments. A few are reasonable, even funny. The rest are from Anglo Canadians who are PISSED OFF at all the TAX DOLLARS being WASTED on bilingualism. There's even a guy advancing the urban legend about the Quebecoise who had to speak English in France because French people couldn't understand her stupid /moon language/.

American don't get so many chances to snicker at the neighbors -- usually, the eye-rolling is going the other way -- so the whole thing is tres amusant.
