[FORUM] Is there anything unexpected about your networks of friends?

A couple of older gay men I know have commented, with surprise, on the fact that a majority of my friends are straight. I don't know why they should be surprised, although I assume that a generation gap is involved: a generation ago, would the normalization of queer sexuality among peers in my age group have been nearly as advanced? (This is a rhetorical question.)

Social networks are lumpy, and often extend in unexpected networks thanks to chance encounters. A majority of my friends might be straight, as I noted above, while others have observed that a disproportionately large number of my Torontonian friends are Americans by origin. (I blame schizmatic and his connections with the American student diaspora at the University of Toronto for that, mostly, at least).

What about you? Is there anything that might strike people as unusual about your circles of friends? Do you and your friends share unexpected interests, or come from a highly specific territory? Are your friends skewed towards a particular demographic?

Discuss.
